Infrastructure Simulation

published: ⏰ 2

The goal of the project is to create a tool for modeling infrastructure, simulating the load and collecting the resulting metrics. tekBlueprint.infra allows you to model and design infrastructure in a virtual environment before you need to allocate resources for real deployments. This will save time, reduce the risk of human errors when calculating the hardware requirements for the planned system or systems.

Key Features

Beta features include:

  • Infrastructure Simulation – allows you to create and test your infrastructure configuration in a fully simulated environment. Provides a rough idea that all components interact as expected without the need for actual deployment.
  • Metrics and Analytics – for each time period during the simulation period, metrics are collected for each system on hardware resource utilization, as well as summary statistics. This information helps to understand the nature of the load and identify problem areas.
  • Scalability Testing – the tool allows you to test various infrastructure configurations using clusters, including load distribution through balancers and various data replication options.
  • Hardware and Software Library – a customizable library of software and hardware components available for use in the simulation. New components can be added by users for reuse.
  • Reporting – automatic creation of detailed reports and charts based on the simulation data, useful for documentation and further analysis.

Limitations

Given the diversity of deployment environments and their combinations, the following limitations apply:

  • Resource Limitations – the simulation environment is still different from the real deployment environment and there can and will be certain differences and assumptions, so there may be discrepancies in the performance metrics in the real environment. The results should be considered as a guesstimate, not a 100% expected match.
  • Complexity of Real-World Scenarios – modeling all possible scenarios can be a difficult task, and some edge cases may not be accurately represented in the simulated environment.
  • Configuration Accuracy Dependency – the accuracy of the simulation is highly dependent on the accuracy of the configuration provided by the user.

Conclusion

In summary, tekBlueprint.infra can be a useful tool for simulating the planned infrastructure, allowing for a preliminary assessment of hardware requirements, which is often required during the design and planning stages of a project.
