tekBlueprint.infra

The project aims to create a tool for infrastructure modeling, load simulation, and metric collection. tekBlueprint.infra allows you to model and design infrastructure in a virtual environment before allocating resources for real deployments. This saves time and reduces the risk of human error when calculating hardware requirements for planned system or systems.
The product is available in two variants: a command-line interface (CLI) for CI/CD pipeline integration, and a web service for team collaboration.
Command-Line Interface (CLI)
A fast infrastructure planning tool that works with declarative XML. Suitable for automation (CI/CD) and integration with version control systems.
Purpose
You describe your software architecture — systems, services, data flows, backup schedules — in XML, and the tool simulates the behavior of the entire system over time. A step-by-step simulation runs, processing request streams, modeling backup tasks, and calculating resource usage metrics for each component. Services are then distributed across servers, and load statistics are aggregated at the server and module levels.
Key Features
- Software Metrics Forecasting — architecture simulation over configurable time periods (hours, days, years) with hourly or finer granularity. Data flows, backup schedules are processed, and metrics are generated for each service: CPU usage, memory consumption, disk I/O, network throughput, request counts.
- Hardware Distribution — based on simulated metrics, services are distributed across servers from the hardware library. The tool accounts for clusters, replicas, and load balancers.
- Report Generation — tabular summary data for servers, services, data flows, backups, and connections. Creation of structured documents from templates and visual deployment topology diagrams.
- Watch Mode — XML editing with automatic simulation restart on changes, supporting iterative scenario analysis without manual restarts.
- Component Libraries — browse and reuse predefined hardware components (servers, CPUs, memory, storage, network interfaces) and service templates (databases, message brokers, caches, web servers). Extend libraries with custom component definitions for reuse.
Workflow
Describe XML model → simulate software metrics over a period → distribute services across hardware → generate reports and diagrams. Each step produces a new XML file for version control or handoff to subsequent stages.
Web Service
A full-featured web application that delivers infrastructure planning in the browser with visual editors, persistent data storage, multi-user access, and team collaboration capabilities.
Purpose
The same simulation engine as the CLI, but accessible through an interactive web interface. Instead of editing XML files, architecture is modeled visually: create projects, define systems and services, add data flows between modules, configure servers, and run forecasts with a few clicks. All data is stored in a shared database, versioned, and available to the team.
Key Features
- Visual Architecture Modeling — manage software systems, services, modules, connections, and backups through a web interface instead of XML files.
- Interactive Data Flow Editor — model complex data flows between service modules. Configure flow properties: request rate, latency, CPU and memory cost, data volume.
- Project Management — organize work by projects with hierarchical structure. Each project contains its own software systems, environments, hardware servers, forecasts, and plans, providing natural isolation between teams or directions.
- Versioned Planning — run multiple forecast versions for a single project to compare different scenarios (growth projections, time horizons, architectural decisions). Each forecast is saved with a timestamp, change log, and full computation log for audit.
- Interactive Reports — view calculated metrics in expandable tables across the entire hierarchy: systems → services → replicas → modules. Filter, sort, and export data to CSV, JSON, or XML formats directly from the browser.
- Component Libraries — create and maintain shared catalogs of hardware components (servers with CPU, memory, storage, network, GPU configurations) and software service templates for team reuse across projects.
- Background Task Processing — long-running simulations execute as background tasks with status tracking, cancellation, and retry capability. Monitor progress and view detailed execution logs.
- Team Collaboration — multi-user access with role-based permissions.
- XML Export — export any forecast or plan to an XML file, maintaining compatibility with the CLI workflow for archiving, sharing, or integration with third-party tools.
- AI Assistant — 15 specialized agents for filling hardware and software forms using natural language. The assistant sees project context, searches components in the library (tekBlueprint.kbase integration) and technical specifications on the web. Generated results are applied to edit forms with a single click.
Workflow
The dashboard guides you through sequential stages: define component libraries → create a project → visually model software architecture → configure hardware servers → run metric forecasts → review hardware plans → generate and export reports.

AI Assistant — Intelligent Help for IT Infrastructure Design
The latest version of tekBlueprint.infra introduces an AI assistant (agent) subsystem that helps fill out hardware and software forms using natural language. The assistant can search the component database, look up specifications online, and see the context of your current project — all accessible through a chat sidebar directly in the editing interface.

A year ago I wrote an article about Sizing calculation for a simple system (CLI). This is a similar article, but using a web service instead of CLI. It has slightly more capabilities and a more convenient interface than working with XML and console.

A small example of sizing calculation for a simple system showing how to describe a blueprint with services, as well as the parameters of the planned load. The description is specially made with a minimum set of services and parameters for them, so as not to overload it with details.
